Welcome! I am a third-year Ph.D. student in Strategy and Business Economics at Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Economics from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2022.
My current research interests include international trade, industrial organization, applied econometrics, and spatial economics. While I’m still building up my research portfolio, if you’re curious to know more about me (or just really love reading CVs), you can check out my CV or drop me an email!
I haven’t put together my dissertation committee yet, but I’m lucky to be working with the greatest supervisors, Keith Head and Scott Orr, who’ve been incredibly supportive and patient with all my research twists and turns. Thanks Keith for always being there to chat about research, life, and everything in between, believing in me even when I don’t, and for being the best advisor I could ask for. And thanks Scott for always being ready to help, for many insightful comments and suggestions and for encouraging me to keep pushing forward. I’m also really grateful to have professors and peers at UBC who make the rollercoaster of Ph.D. life a lot easier to handle.
Right now, I’m digging into ideas for my job market paper, which has been… an adventure, to say the least. There are so many brilliant researchers who’ve already tackled the big, important questions in these fields (and done it incredibly well). With my currently limited knowledge and abilities, I’m hoping to build on their work and make a small contribution of my own. Throughout this journey, I’m excited to keep learning, chasing interesting questions and contributing, even in small ways —because that’s what a Ph.D. is all about, right?
I’ve been fortunate to live and study in two amazing coastal cities, each with its own unique charm. At HKUST, I was spoiled with stunning sea views right from campus, and when I wasn’t hitting the books, I explored Hong Kong’s vibrant streets, amazing food scene, and breathtaking skyline. Hiking trails, hidden beaches, and scenic walks offered the perfect escape. Now at UBC, I’m equally lucky to have beautiful ocean views, with mountains and forests just around the corner. Vancouver’s mild weather makes it easy to hike, bike around Stanley Park, or stroll the seawall when it’s not raining—which totally happens, I promise! One of my favorite pastimes is watching ships drift by and checking their port call information using AIS websites (because who doesn’t want to know where that cargo ship is from and headed?). Even when the drizzle shows up (which it does… a lot), the city’s food scene and natural beauty make it all worth it. Both places have taught me to balance academic life with great meals, fresh air, and the occasional uphill climb (literally and figuratively).
